Is Exness legal in South Africa? The FSCA authorisation, explained

Exness ZA (Pty) Ltd is an FSCA-authorised financial services provider. Its FSP number, who supplies the CFDs, and how to check both on the FSCA register.

Exness operates in South Africa through an FSCA-authorised entity: Exness ZA (Pty) Ltd1 is a Financial Service Provider (FSP) authorised by the FSCA, FSP number 510241. The CFDs themselves are supplied by Exness (SC) Ltd1, which is licensed by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) of Seychelles, Securities Dealer licence SD0252 and is authorised by the FSCA as an Over-The-Counter Derivatives Provider (ODP)1.

Two companies are involved. The South African entity is the one the FSCA authorised as a financial services provider; the contracts you trade are supplied by the Seychelles entity, which the FSCA has authorised as an over-the-counter derivatives provider.

How to check the FSP number yourself

Search the FSCA's register of financial services providers on the regulator's website (fsca.co.za) for FSP number 510241. The name on the register should match Exness ZA (Pty) Ltd1. A different name, or no result, is a reason to stop and ask the broker.

What FSCA authorisation does not change

Authorisation means a regulator supervises the firm; it does not make trading safer for your money. Exness's own South African site warns: “Trading leveraged products such as CFDs on forex and derivatives may not be suitable for all investors as they carry a high level of risk to your invested capital1.” Before you deposit, read which entity your client agreement names and keep a copy.
