Pivot Point Calculator

Pivot points turn the previous day's, week's or month's high, low and close into a central pivot and a set of support and resistance levels for the next period. Pick a method, enter the three prices from your chart and the levels update instantly.

1. Method:
2. Previous period (day, week or month):

Classic pivot levels

LevelPrice
Resistance R31.11633
Resistance R21.11067
Resistance R11.10633
Pivot (P)1.10067
Support S11.09633
Support S21.09067
Support S31.08633

Use the high, low and close of the last completed period from your broker's chart. Brokers close the day at different times, so levels can differ slightly between platforms.

Pivot point formulas

Classic: P = (H + L + C) ÷ 3 R1 = 2P − L S1 = 2P − H

Classic: R2 = P + (H − L) S2 = P − (H − L) R3 = H + 2(P − L) S3 = L − 2(H − P)

Fibonacci: R1/R2/R3 = P + 0.382 / 0.618 / 1.000 × (H − L) S levels = P − the same

Camarilla: R1…R4 = C + (H − L) × 1.1 ÷ 12 / 6 / 4 / 2 S levels = C − the same

Woodie: P = (H + L + 2C) ÷ 4 R1 = 2P − L S1 = 2P − H R2 = P + (H − L) S2 = P − (H − L)

DeMark: X = 2H + L + C if C > O, H + 2L + C if C < O, H + L + 2C if C = O P = X ÷ 4 R1 = X ÷ 2 − L S1 = X ÷ 2 − H

H, L, C and O are the high, low, close and open of the last completed period. Day traders use the previous day; swing traders often use the previous week or month. The pivot (P) is the balance point: price above it is read as a bullish bias, below it as bearish.

Camarilla levels sit close to the previous close and are used for intraday reversals (R3/S3) and breakouts (R4/S4). DeMark uses the open as well and gives only one support and one resistance.

Worked examples

Classic pivots on EUR/USD

  1. H 1.1050, L 1.0950, C 1.1020
  2. P = 3.3020 ÷ 3 = 1.10067
  3. R1 = 2 × 1.10067 − 1.0950 = 1.10633
  4. S1 = 2 × 1.10067 − 1.1050 = 1.09633

P 1.10067, R1 1.10633, S1 1.09633, R2 1.11067, S2 1.09067.

Camarilla R3/S3 on EUR/USD

  1. Same day: range = 0.0100
  2. Range × 1.1 ÷ 4 = 0.00275
  3. R3 = 1.1020 + 0.00275 = 1.10475
  4. S3 = 1.1020 − 0.00275 = 1.09925

R3 1.10475 and S3 1.09925: the two levels intraday traders watch most.

Prices in the examples are round hypothetical values, not quotes. Levels from different brokers can differ because their daily candles close at different times.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a pivot point?

The classic pivot is the average of the previous period's high, low and close: P = (H + L + C) ÷ 3. Resistance 1 is 2P − L and support 1 is 2P − H. With H 1.1050, L 1.0950 and C 1.1020, P is 1.10067, R1 1.10633 and S1 1.09633.

Which pivot point method is best?

No method is best for every market. Classic pivots are the most widely watched, which is why many traders use them. Camarilla levels are tighter and suit intraday trading; Fibonacci pivots space the levels by 38.2%, 61.8% and 100% of the range.

Should I use daily, weekly or monthly pivots?

Match the period to how long you hold trades: daily pivots for intraday trades, weekly pivots for trades held a few days and monthly pivots for longer swings. Always use the last completed period.

Do pivot points work on gold?

The formulas work on any instrument with a high, low and close, including XAU/USD and indices such as US30. Set the decimals to 2 so the levels match your gold chart.

Are pivot points a trading signal?

No. They are reference levels where price has often paused or reversed, not a prediction. Use them with a stop-loss and a position size that limits the loss if the level breaks.
