Fibonacci Retracement and Extension Calculator

Enter the swing high and swing low of a move and choose whether it was an uptrend or a downtrend. The calculator lists the Fibonacci retracement levels where a pullback often pauses and the extension levels traders use as profit targets.

1. Trend of the swing:

Retracements (pullback from the high)

0%2450.00
23.6%2426.40
38.2%2411.80
50%2400.00
61.8%2388.20
78.6%2371.40
100%2350.00

Extensions (targets above the high)

127.2%2477.20
141.4%2491.40
161.8%2511.80
200%2550.00
261.8%2611.80

Fibonacci levels are reference zones, not signals: price often moves through them. Combine them with your own stop-loss and position size.

Fibonacci formulas

Range = Swing high − Swing low

Uptrend retracement = High − Range × ratio (23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%, 78.6%)

Uptrend extension = Low + Range × ratio (127.2%, 141.4%, 161.8%, 200%, 261.8%)

Downtrend retracement = Low + Range × ratio Downtrend extension = High − Range × ratio

The ratios come from the Fibonacci sequence: 61.8% is roughly one number divided by the next, 38.2% one number divided by the number two places later, and 161.8% the inverse of 61.8%. 50% is not a Fibonacci ratio but is included because so many traders watch the halfway point.

Extensions here are measured from the start of the swing, so the 100% extension equals the swing end and 161.8% projects the move 61.8% beyond it. Some platforms measure extensions from a third point instead; check which method your chart uses.

Worked examples

Gold uptrend retracement

  1. Low 2,350.00, high 2,450.00
  2. Range = 100.00
  3. 38.2% = 2,450 − 38.20 = 2,411.80
  4. 61.8% = 2,450 − 61.80 = 2,388.20

Pullback zone: 2,411.80 to 2,388.20, with 50% at 2,400.00.

Gold uptrend extension target

  1. Same swing: low 2,350.00, range 100.00
  2. 161.8% = 2,350 + 161.80 = 2,511.80
  3. 127.2% = 2,350 + 127.20 = 2,477.20

Targets above the high: 2,477.20 and 2,511.80.

Prices in the examples are round hypothetical values, not quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate Fibonacci retracement levels?

Subtract the swing low from the swing high to get the range, then, in an uptrend, subtract range × 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6% from the high. A gold swing from 2,350 to 2,450 gives a 61.8% retracement at 2,388.20.

What is the most important Fibonacci level?

Traders watch 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% the most, and many call the zone between 50% and 61.8% the 'golden pocket'. No level is guaranteed to hold; price often moves straight through.

How do I draw Fibonacci in a downtrend?

Measure from the swing high down to the swing low. Retracements are then added to the low (the bounce) and extensions are subtracted from the high to project targets below the low. Choose 'Downtrend' in the calculator.

What is a Fibonacci extension?

An extension projects how far a move may run past its end. With a swing from 2,350 to 2,450, the 161.8% extension is 2,350 + 161.8 = 2,511.80. Traders use extensions as take-profit levels.

How do I size a trade at a Fibonacci level?

Place the stop beyond the next level (for example below 78.6% when buying at 61.8%), measure that distance in pips and use the lot size calculator to keep the loss to your chosen % of the account.
