Forex Compounding Calculator

Compounding means each month's gain is added to the balance, so the next month's percentage is earned on a larger amount. Enter a starting balance, a monthly return and the number of months, plus any amount you add each month, to see the balance month by month.

Negative = a monthly withdrawal.

Compounding formula

Balance after n months = Start × (1 + r)ⁿ (no deposits)

With deposits: Balance(month) = Balance(previous) × (1 + r) + Deposit

r = monthly return ÷ 100

The calculator applies the return to the balance at the start of each month and then adds the deposit, so a deposit starts earning the following month.

A steady monthly return is an assumption, not something trading delivers. Real accounts have losing months, and a single drawdown can undo many months of compounding; check the drawdown and risk of ruin calculators alongside this one.

Worked examples

$1,000 at 5% a month for 12 months

  1. Balance = $1,000 × 1.05¹²
  2. 1.05¹² = 1.7959
  3. Balance = $1,795.86

Ends at $1,795.86: a gain of $795.86 (79.6%).

$5,000 at 3% a month, +$200 a month, 24 months

  1. Each month: balance × 1.03 + $200
  2. After 12 months: $9,967.21
  3. After 24 months: $17,049.26
  4. Paid in: $5,000 + 24 × $200 = $9,800

Ends at $17,049.26: $7,249.26 of it is trading gain.

$10,000 at 2% a month for 36 months

  1. Balance = $10,000 × 1.02³⁶
  2. 1.02³⁶ = 2.0399
  3. Balance = $20,398.87

The account roughly doubles in 3 years at 2% a month.

Figures assume the same return every month and nothing withdrawn. They show the arithmetic of compounding, not an expected result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate compound growth on a trading account?

Multiply the balance by (1 + monthly return) once for every month: $1,000 at 5% a month for 12 months is $1,000 × 1.05¹² = $1,795.86. With monthly deposits, add the deposit after each month's growth.

Is 10% a month realistic in forex?

Treat it as very unlikely to last. 10% a month compounds to more than 3 times the balance in a year, and strategies that aim for it usually take large risks per trade, which raises the chance of a deep drawdown. Use the risk of ruin calculator to see what the risk per trade implies.

What is the rule of 72?

A shortcut for doubling time: 72 ÷ the return per period ≈ periods to double. At 2% a month, 72 ÷ 2 = 36 months, which matches the exact figure of about 35 months.

Should I withdraw profits or compound them?

That is a personal choice. Compounding grows the position size with the account, so losses grow too; withdrawing locks in part of the gain. Enter a negative monthly amount in the calculator to model regular withdrawals.
