Forex profit formula
Pips = (Close price − Open price) ÷ Pip size (reverse the sign for a sell)
Profit = Pips × Pip value per 1 lot × Lots − Commission × Lots
USD/JPY pip value per lot = 100,000 × 0.01 ÷ USD/JPY close price
Pip size is 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for yen pairs and, in this calculator, $0.10 for gold (XAU/USD). For pairs quoted in US dollars, such as EUR/USD and GBP/USD, one pip on one standard lot is worth $10. When USD is the first currency, as in USD/JPY, the pip value depends on the exchange rate, so the calculator uses the close price.
The spread is already inside the prices: a buy opens at the ask and closes at the bid. Swap (overnight financing) is charged separately and is not included.
Worked examples
Buy 0.50 lot EUR/USD
- Open 1.1000, close 1.1050
- Pips = 0.0050 ÷ 0.0001 = 50
- Profit = 50 × $10 × 0.50 = $250.00
Profit: $250.00 (before swap).
Sell 0.10 lot gold (XAU/USD)
- Open 2,400.00, close 2,385.00
- Pips = $15.00 ÷ $0.10 = 150 (a sell gains as price falls)
- Profit = 150 × $10 × 0.10 = $150.00
Profit: $150.00 (before swap).
Buy 1 lot USD/JPY
- Open 150.00, close 151.00
- Pips = 1.00 ÷ 0.01 = 100
- Pip value = 100,000 × 0.01 ÷ 151 = $6.62
- Profit = 100 × $6.6225 × 1 = $662.25
Profit: $662.25 (before swap).
Prices in the examples are round hypothetical values, not quotes. Some brokers count $0.01 as a gold pip; the dollar result is the same.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate profit in forex?
Profit = pips moved × pip value per lot × lots. Example: buying 0.50 lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000 and closing at 1.1050 is 50 pips × $10 × 0.50 = $250. Subtract any commission and swap.
How much is 1 pip worth?
On a standard lot (100,000 units) of a pair quoted in US dollars, one pip is $10; on 0.10 lot it is $1 and on 0.01 lot $0.10. On gold, one $0.10 move is $10 per 100-oz lot. Use the pip calculator for other sizes and pairs.
How is profit calculated on gold?
One standard lot of XAU/USD is usually 100 oz, so each $1.00 move in price is $100 per lot and each $0.10 move is $10. A $15 move on 0.10 lot is $150.
Does the calculator include the spread?
Yes, as long as you enter the real fill prices: a buy opens at the ask and closes at the bid, so the spread is already in the difference. Commission is entered separately; swap is not included.
Can a rebate change my profit?
A rebate is paid per lot traded, win or lose, so it adds a fixed amount per lot to every result. It lowers your cost; it does not turn a losing trade into a winner. See the forex rebate calculator for the amount per lot.
