Under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), resident persons in India may undertake forex transactions only with authorised persons and for permitted purposes. Electronic forex transactions must be undertaken only on electronic trading platforms (ETPs) authorised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or on recognised stock exchanges (NSE, BSE, MSE). Residents who trade forex on unauthorised ETPs are liable to penal action under FEMA.

Forex Trading Regulations and the RBI Alert List

Under FEMA, residents may deal in forex only with authorised persons for permitted purposes and, electronically, only on RBI-authorised platforms or recognised Indian exchanges (NSE, BSE, MSE), with penal action possible for trading on unauthorised platforms. To inform the public about entities operating without approval, the Reserve Bank of India maintains an Alert List of entities not authorised to deal in forex or to operate electronic trading platforms (ETPs) for forex transactions.

According to the Reserve Bank of India: Alert List (updated as on November 19, 2025) (also reported by Outlook Money: RBI's updated Alert List), Exness, XM, Vantage Markets, IC Markets and Forex4you are named on this list. Furthermore, as reported by Finance Magnates: Forex4you becomes Markets4you, Markets4you is the new name of Forex4you following a 2024 rebrand. The RBI Alert List specifically names Forex4you (forex4you.com) and does not list the name Markets4you.

How to Verify a Platform and Check Compliance

Before engaging in foreign exchange transactions, Indian residents should verify the regulatory standing of any entity or electronic trading platform by following these steps:

  • Consult the RBI Alert List: Review the official Reserve Bank of India Alert List to confirm whether an entity has been flagged for operating without authorisation.
  • Recognise Alert List limitations: As noted in the Reserve Bank of India: FAQs on unauthorised forex trading platforms, the Alert List is not exhaustive. An entity that is not on it should not be assumed to be authorised by the RBI.
  • Confirm platform authorisation: Verify that the electronic trading platform is explicitly authorised by the RBI or operates on recognised stock exchanges (NSE, BSE, MSE), and that transactions occur only with authorised persons for permitted purposes.
  • Seek qualified advice: If the legal standing of any platform or transaction type remains uncertain, consult a qualified local legal or financial adviser.

Trading Risk and Disclaimer

Leveraged forex and CFD trading can lose money quickly; rebates do not offset trading losses. Swaps vary by instrument, direction and broker and are shown in the platform's contract specification. For further information, review our risk disclaimer.
